How Did I Get Here? My Journey Into Software.

Posted on:December 8, 2023 at 10:42 PM

This article is a short introduction of myself to get the ball rolling on this blog. I hope that you enjoy!

Intro

Hello world! My name is Kyle Conel, and I am a software developer. I have been programming for about 9 years now (with a lot of breaks in the first few years). I knew I was interested in programming when I was about 5 or six years old. I told my mom that I wanted to make video games when I grew up. Over the span of my childhood and through highschool, I tried many times to learn how to program, but I never really got anywhere. I would always get stuck on the same things, and I would give up. I would always come back to it though, because I knew that I wanted to make games. In 2014, my freshman year of college, something changed. I found a tutorial series for the Unity game engine, and I decided to follow along. I was able to make a simple game, and I was hooked. I knew that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life in some way, shape or form. From that point, I messed around with tutorials for a couple of years, and I finally made my very first game in 2017. It’s called DreamScape, and you can find it here: DreamScape. It’s not very good, but it was a huge milestone for me. I finally made a game! I was so proud of myself. I knew that I wanted to keep going, and I wanted to make more games. Ever since then, I’ve created a multitude of games for game jams, and have created some software projects here and there.

What I’m Doing Now

For the past 3+ years, I’ve been a professional software engineer. I’ve worked for a few companies already, and am currently working at Atlassian, on Jira Align. You may be familiar with Atlassian, as they are the current developers and supporters of Trello. Outside of work, my passion for games is still burning. As of late, I’ve been creating a game engine in Julia, called JulGame. I’ve been documenting my progress on my YouTube channel, and I’ve been streaming some of my development on Twitch. I plan on working on the game engine for quite a while, as I still have quite a bit planned for it. I also plan on creating a game with it, and I will be documenting that process as well. I’m also planning on creating a game with my engine to be on steam.

Conclusion

I hope that you enjoyed this short introduction to myself. I plan on writing more articles about my journey into software, and I plan on writing articles about my game engine, and the games that I make with it. I hope that you will join me on this journey, and I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I do. In the mean time, feel free to check out my YouTube channel, and my Twitch channel. I also have a Discord server if you want to chat with me, or other people in the community.
